Digital Presentation Instructions & Rubric
For the next two weeks, we will be reading Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman, a story detailing the lives of 13 very different people who are all connected by a garden that ends up transforming their lives.
This week you are going to be creating a digital presentation, providing the following information as part of your presentation.
Compare and contrast your life as part of a community in your home country with your life as part of a community of immigrants in the United States.
1.) What community have you been a part of in the past? Provide background about your past life and the community you belonged to.
2.) How does this compare to the community you are part of now at Emma Lazarus High School? Detail the changes in community and the support you receive now from our school and your peers, friends, or families.
3.) Did you make choices about what community you would join when you arrived in the United States?
4.)Was one community more supportive than the other (i.e. home country vs. new country)?
Look to my presentation here for an example of what your presentation could look like.

The following rubric details the four qualities you will be graded on:
Homework Class 6: Monday Week 2, July 18, 2016
1. Read chapters 3 - 5: Wendell; Gonzalo; & Leona
2. Answer the following question in your journal. Examine the following quote from the chapter on Wendell.
“There’s plenty about my life I can’t change. Can’t bring the dead back to life on this earth. Can’t make the world loving and kind. Can’t change myself into a millionaire. But a patch of ground in this trashy lot - I can change that. I can change it big. Better to put my time into that than moaning about the other all day. That little grammar-school girl showed me that.” pg. 16
Do you feel like there are things in your life that you cannot change? If you could, what would you bring back or wish for?
Has anyone showed you how to live a better life (i.e. Kim showed Wendell you can make anything out of nothing when she started the garden in the vacant lot)?
3. Begin to work on your digital presentation. Digital presentation materials due by Thursday this week. Presentations on Monday next week.

Write your post with appropriate link and summary, along with answers to the above questions.

Weekend Homework
You have received comments on your first draft.
Your final draft is due to me by Saturday at midnight.
REMEMBER:
- Past tense verbs ...
- Introduction ... Introduce a struggle and preview these struggles or challenges.
Barack Obama went through many struggles early in his life. Some of these struggles had to do with his family and living in many different places. But, even with all of these struggles, Barack Obama still found great success in life.
- Conclusion ... Barack Obama is nothing like me or Sadako.
"Barack Obama has an amazing life story. He faced many struggles and persevered. When comparing him to Sadako or myself, there are not many similarities. Sadako faced health challenges and ended up dying. Barack Obama's struggles came not from health, but from ..."
---
- Be specific about only ... struggles, challenges, and success.
- Provide 3 links at the bottom of your writing - works cited.

Discussion Question #2: Class 3
If you have been going on social media or have watched the news recently, you will see that the United States is currently seeing a lot of protests over police violence against African Americans and people of color. This is part of a social justice movement called Black Lives Matter.
While our theme for this week is struggle builds character and may lead to success, people in this country are growing upset because for many years African Americans and people of color have been protesting against police brutality and unfair treatment, yet nothing has changed in the ways that police arrest and treat these groups of people in comparison to white people.
Post links here about what #blacklivesmatter and other social justice groups are doing to try to change the way police treat people of color and any success / protests that are currently happening in this country. Give a simple summary of the information available in your link.
*NOTE: There are many graphic images / video of violence which you MAY NOT post to this board. Only link to news articles or other memes that do not include violent / graphic material.
