If you have been going on social media or have watched the news recently, you will see that the United States is currently seeing a lot of protests over police violence against African Americans and people of color. This is part of a social justice movement called Black Lives Matter.
While our theme for this week is struggle builds character and may lead to success, people in this country are growing upset because for many years African Americans and people of color have been protesting against police brutality and unfair treatment, yet nothing has changed in the ways that police arrest and treat these groups of people in comparison to white people.
Post links here about what #blacklivesmatter and other social justice groups are doing to try to change the way police treat people of color and any success / protests that are currently happening in this country. Give a simple summary of the information available in your link.
*NOTE: There are many graphic images / video of violence which you MAY NOT post to this board. Only link to news articles or other memes that do not include violent / graphic material.

ReplyDeletePeter Liang is a policeman. But because he appeared unexpectedly in the course of duty, the bullet bounced off the wall by mistake in black man.But he didn't have jail time, just was sentenced to probation and community service. SO, I think this is a good example for a racial discrimination.
Why!? Finish your thought, you were doing a great job. Always back up why you believe something with thoughtful analysis.

ReplyDeleteThis article was about two black men were killed by police officers. And have many protesters went to demonstrate. Protestors hold up their hands during the "hands up, don't shoot" when they demonstrate. Those people want to protesting against police brutality and unfair treatment. So I think this is a good example for #blacklivesmatter.
What kinds of police brutality or unfair treatment are they concerned about? Do you share their concerns?

ReplyDeleteThis article is talk about the black procession on the street. I saw some black were hitting white. And you can see some evident to show there were more white killed by police than black in 2015. It's not just more than a little. So I think it's not all about black's right. I know racial discrimination is being America still, but we can't think it is about this on all the thing that color people killed by white. You can see the black who killed by police was not follow the police in the essay. Maybe it was the black boy's fault. Maybe not. We couldn't just because he's black so this is racial discrimination. Anyway, as you can see. Black has 2.5 times of white of possibility that killed by police. So the racial discrimination very likely being this event., but also need consider and given evident.
Hao Hui, I like that you are forming an argument based on different kinds of evidence. However, I would disagree with your analysis in different points. I think that the facts are clear the African Americans are policed in a different manner than whites and suffer oppression through arrest, violence, and imprisonment.

ReplyDeleteFrom this article we can clearly see that the police with obvious racial discrimination to law enforcement. In their eyes, white is law-abiding people and people of other ethnicities, especially blacks are likely to commit crimes. And they are going to be this idea into action. The government did not go to constrain them. This is obviously the racial discrimination example. But lucky is the judge has been aware of these errors and take action to change its
After reading this article and agreeing with the points about discrimination towards African Americans, do you think the laws should be changed?

ReplyDeleteThis is not fair on my flag there is a serious sentence "together we strength" even if we don't have the same skin color but we are not different inside , how the police treate black people is a serious problem we need to live free, breathe free, the world is one home let's share it.. Go on this link and you'll have some idea about the "black live matter"
Kervens, I like your statement of solidarity with the Black Lives Movement. Are you planning on helping this group or participating in action?

ReplyDeleteThis article is talking about a white Phoenix police officer fatally shot an unarmed black man Brisbon. The white police officer erroneously thought he was selling drugs. Without knowing the truth of the situation shot he. And did not prosecute the white policeman.I think this is a good example for #blacklivesmatter#.
For Black Lives Matter to do what? Do you think people should be protesting? It seems like you agree that the white police officer in Phoenix was wrong?

ReplyDeleteThis news is about what Black Lives Matter movement does for African-American community. The group lets many people to join them by Facebook or hashtag. They want to sway politics and avoid violence. The group make people become allies. Most importantly, the group resists violence and will expand its influence to make it stronger.
What are some ways that the group may try to expand its influence? Do the activists have any ideas of what actions they can take?

ReplyDeletehttp://observers.france24.com/fr/20160707-video-direct-mort-police-minnesota
ReplyDeleteThis link shows the cruelty of police officers against blacks. It is a story of a woman who live filming the aggressiveness of police officers towards her boyfriend under her eyes. "Report by the woman in the video that the officer has asked her boyfriend to show his license but he replied that he was in his wallet but warned that he had a gun. " Do not move, "said the policeman. But by raising his arm the officer shoots him four or five times."
No matter or how ,we all are black it's not because of our skins color ,it's because black is universal. Why those who protect us causes death, if a police officer feels racist there is no reason to wear the uniform. "A small Body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their Mission can alter the course of history" #black_live_Matter. We are the world.
Good statements! Do you know that there have been many cases over the past few years of police officers retaliating against people who film police officers? For instance, the man who filmed the death of Eric Garner, Ramsey Orta, has 5 different criminal cases that have been opened against him since filming the police using a chokehold to kill Garner.
Deletehttp://newyork.cbslocal.com/2016/03/19/donald-trump-protest-manhattan/
ReplyDeleteThis news is about Hundreds Rally At Anti-Trump Protest In Manhattan. This news contain that a few hundred demonstrators accumulated in Manhattan on Saturday to challenge Republican presidential leader Donald Trump, walking from one high rise that bears his name to another. Also, the dissenters, that incorporated migrants' rights activists, understudies and communists, accumulated in Columbus Circle close to the Trump International Hotel and Tower. They then walked crosswise over Central Park South to Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue where Trump lives before coming back to Columbus Circle for a rally.
Good summary Fernando. What were the protesters' goals? How do you think protests against Trump's anti-immigrant platform connect with the Black Lives Matter movement?

Those links can give us the access to different internet pages related with one of the most mentioned arguments in the last few weeks about black people and the NYPD, many people think that this events are happening because of beging racist and they are trying to make it stop, because there had been different cases where black people were killed by white police man, even though they didn't have enough reasons to do it.
Good point about the lack of evidence the police have in many of these cases. I like how you provided the class with many links to check out. Do you think these cases of white police officers killing black men are similar in some kind of way, or are they all unique?
DeletePhat Chau, you should go into detail with a summary here so that we will know if we should read this article or not.
ReplyDeleteWow, you have compiled a disheartening list of the many groups of people who have been targeted and the victims of racism in the history of the United States. Do you identify with any of these groups / support Black Lives Matter today?
ReplyDeleteRalph, you state that the deadliest crimes and acts of injustice have been committed against blacks this year, 2016. However, if you look at the 20th century in the United States, many of the patterns of police brutality and systematic oppression have been present throughout the this past century. This goes all the way back to the formation of this country and the foundation of slavery. :(
ReplyDeleteNilufar, it sounds like you have great intentions and support for Black Lives Matters. Thank you for your emphatic support!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2016/jul/18/black-lives-matter-note-found-near-police-cruiser-/
ReplyDeleteThis news is someone destroy the police car and left a note near the police car. And a black gunman killed three officers and injuring three people. Until now they still do not know who did it. It was sad. If there is a problem, they can talk to police officer, and fix the problem on the right way. Stop killing or hurt other people.
